4 βδάλλω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `milk (cows)' (Pl.).Other forms: mostly present (rare aorists βδάλας, βδήλαιο). Also βδέλλω (sch. Theocr. 11, 34). Cf. βδέλλα `leech'.Derivatives: βδάλσις `suction' (Gal.). Difficult βδαλοί ῥαφίδες (`garfish, Belone acus') θαλάσσιαι. καὶ φλέβες κρισσώδεις (`varicose veins') H. (not a mistake for βελόνη); βελλαι `id.' H., misread for βδαλοί, or a variant of *βδελλαι?.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: That βδάλλω looks like a zero grade of βδέλλ-(α) is no doubt deceptive. The meaning `leech' and the group βδ- show that it is a Pre-Gr. word, as does the - λλ- (perh. bdaly-, or *byaly-). If βδαλοί does belong here, it shows Pre-Gr. - λλ\/λ-.Page in Frisk: 1,229Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βδάλλω

5 βλέτυες
Grammatical information: pl.m\/f?Meaning: αἱ βδέλλαι H.Other forms: *βλίτυξ (ms. βαιτυξ) βδέλλα H.; the correction (Latte) seems evident, but is not mentioned by DELG.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Analysed as a - τυ-derivation from a stam βλε- seen in καταβλέθει and καβλέει (both) καταπίνει, and βλεῖ βλίσσει, ἀμέλγει, βλίζει H.; note that βλίζω is further unknown, and that βλίσσει can hardly be βλίττω which has a quite different meaning (`cut out the comb of bees'); DELG s.v. thinks the gloss may be corrupt. But a root βλε- is impossible in IE (basic shape CeC-). So the word must be Pre-Gr., which is confirmed by βλίτυξ (Fur. 355; for - υς beside - υξ cf. Fur. 218 on μῆρυξ). Cf. βλωμός, βλῆρ, βλῆραι, βδελλα, δέλεαρ,Page in Frisk: 1,243Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βλέτυες

6 δεμελέας
Grammatical information: Acc. pl. f.Meaning: `leeches' (Epid.), δεμβλεῖς βδέλλαι H. (with - μβλ- from - μλ-; but between δέμει and δέμνια; so with Bücheler and Latte for (*) δεμελεῖς?).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Unexplained. Attempts to connect Lat. lumbrīcus `intestinal worm' in Bq and W.-Hofmann. Doubtful also Alb. dhemje `maggot'.Page in Frisk: 1,363-364Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > δεμελέας

7 δρῖλος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: unknown, `circumcised man' (= verpus in Latin glosses) (AP, Amphissa; on the meaning Diels IF 15, 4-6.).Derivatives: δρίλακες βδέλλαι H. (Chantr. Form. 380).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: No etymology. M. Scheller in Pok. 208 adduces δριάουσαν θάλλουσαν H. which like δριάεντα χλωρά is based on δρίος, pl. δρία `bush, shrubs'; the supposed meaning `swelling, Schwellender' (from where both `circumcized man' [: `penis'] as `leech') is quite in the air. - Against H. Petersson (Arm. titeṙn `crocodile') Kretschmer Glotta 14, 229. Other attempts by von Loewenthal WuS 10, 186 and Sapir Lang. 15, 185. See Bq. and κροκόδιλος; see also Diels l.c. (unclear to me).Page in Frisk: 1,417-418Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > δρῖλος
